In a rapidly changing environment, firms must react quickly to survive. Firms that want to gain a competitive advantage should do more. It is not enough just to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Also, firms should differentiate themselves from other firms and innovate. Today, innovating is a strategy that should be applied to every firm. Recent research shows that firms that can innovate have better performance than other firms, survive for a long time, and increase their profitability. Firms that innovate are more successful in marketing, finance, human resources, production, and research and development than other firms (Daneels, 2002). In the information age, in which it is imperative to adapt to change and innovations rapidly, firms need innovation management practices to survive.

Demographics is one of the outside sources of innovation opportunities.

Regardless of the source of innovation, the capacity to use the opportunity is related to the innovation culture of the firm.

A company’s corporate reputation is the sum of all the views, perceptions and beliefs held about the company based on its history and its prospects in comparison to close competitors.

Customers can be considered among the other potential sources of innovation apart from the inside and outside sources.

Universities and Research Centers

Any change in the population, for example in terms of average age, dependency ratios, life expectancy, family structures, birth rates etc. can be regarded as important variables for firms. This type of source for innovation is related to demographic changes.

Process needs can be considered as one of the inside sources of innovation opportunities.
